Couch Cancer Ride

From May 18th to May 26th, 10 cyclists road for an average of 200kms per day on a self-funded mission to raise money for the COUCH Wellness Centre.

Over $70, 000 was raised for the COUCH CancerWellness Centre

A huge thank-you to the riders, support crew, sponsors and family and friends for supporting this great initiative.

Cairns charity organisation COUCH is raising funds to build and operate the Wellness Centre to assist in cancer treatment recovery on land donated by the Woodward family.

As ride co-founder and cancer survivor Michael Bowmaker explains:

“The ride is a huge challenge physically, however it’s nothing compared to the challenge faced by people going through cancer treatment. All of us will be affected in some way by cancer during our lifetime, either directly or indirectly. By donating to the riders, you’ll not only be helping other locals – but perhaps one of your own family members.”

Cancer…..It has to be the most frightening word in the human language. That one word that makes your heart stop just for a minute as soon as you hear it.

Over the last few years it has become a constant in my life having affected many, many friends and more importantly, my family.
After losing so many and some who are still here after such huge battles like my brother Michael and my dear friend Mary, I have to admit the last one was the hardest. My beautiful, handsome man as I liked to call him, my husband Francis or “Frankie” as most people knew him. He fought so hard and words will never describe the devastating loss which is now my life.

Well, I’m definitely not a superstar on the bike like my brother Michael and sister, Janine. However, I can still cook, clean and support them by joining them on this amazing journey of a lifetime to help raise funds to complete the Couch Wellness Centre.

Please get behind this cause and help make a difference to someone’s struggle as they fight for survival to live another day.

Katie and I are involved in the Couch Cancer Fundraiser Ride from Bloomhill to Cairns for a cause close to our hearts.

Having lost a very close friend in Julie Shearer to Breast Cancer 16 months ago and with Michael Bowmaker, a close friend having battled his way through melonoma, we feel that any support we can give to this worthy cause will assist future suffers to beat this dreadful disease.

Living and being involved in the Cairns community for many years, we hope we can in some way assist the development of Cairns Couch Wellness Centre.

I’m getting involved as I’ve seen too many friends affected by this terrible disease and also having known Charlie Woodward and how much this cause meant to him.

I am also immensely proud of Michael Bowmaker and his fellow riders for undertaking this huge challenge that I have offered to drive a support vehicle and support them in any way I can.

My father passed away at a young age due to cancer, my wife’s mother also. And due to my inability to ride such a long stretch, my experience in catering would help greatly along with support – so giving my skill and time is the the least I can do for such a worthy cause.

So when my niece, Janine first asked me, I thought great, I will able to spend some quality time with Janine and Michael, fantastic!

Then I started to think about this awesome adventure I have been invited to join in on and thought wow, how lucky am I…We have all been touched by the dreaded C word, some more than others, so to get an opportunity to help in some small way to make their dream of a wellness centre in Cairns a reality is fantastic.

During the course of my husband Dave’s illness he had many admissions to the Olivia Newton John wellness centre, he/we were very grateful that was available as this terrible disease progressed…

This ride will be huge for all the team, a bit easier for those of us on 4 wheels! Excited and nervous (road maps are not my forte!!) but what’s the worst that can happen …
